Katalyn Atrilmed
Katalyn Atrilmed is a Plasidian woman, primary handler to Crowned Prince Vynisian Atril of Atril, and the most senior member of House Atrilmed serving the throne. Her house is one of the oldest of Atril's oath-houses — non-noble Plasidian houses bound by formal oath to a noble house. The suffix `-med` carries that meaning across most Plasidian house lineages: an unbroken line of service to a named noble line. House Atrilmed has served Atril longer than the current line of Atril has held the throne, and Katalyn was raised inside that history from the day she could speak.
Her role with Vynisian began before he was Crowned Prince. She has handled him through court, through formal travel, through assassination attempts, and through the gradual revelation that the boy she was assigned to protect would become the man who initiated a coalition against Edith Markov. She loves him. She does not always agree with him.
She is an Atrilian Nationalist. She holds, openly within the houses she trusts and quietly outside them, that Atril's resources belong to Atril and that Plasid's commitments to clean up problems originating in Markovia are wasted on a fight that is not Atril's to wage. She serves Vynisian because the oath of Atrilmed is to the throne of Atril, not to the policies of its holder. She has never wavered on that distinction.
When Vynisian's delegation arrived at VTC HQ to request Aries' help, Katalyn used the meeting to surface two things she wanted Aries to see at once: Vynisian's deeply private comfort with being treated as a woman by people who care for him, and her own political objection to the coalition Vynisian was building. She did the first by misleading Aries into believing Vynisian was a princess and watching what Aries did with the information. She did the second by stating her nationalism plainly when the political discussion turned to Markovia. Neither act was a betrayal. She wanted Aries to know exactly what kind of court he was walking into.
Her version of Atrilian Nationalism is the mainstream one. House Atrilmed and the other long-standing oath houses hold a politics that opposes Plasidian foreign commitments on principle but accepts the throne's decisions with discipline. A more radical wing exists, located primarily in a small cluster of younger noble houses Katalyn has watched warily for years; she has noted their names in her own files and considered them politically distasteful but operationally insignificant. She does not, during the Plasid campaign, know what they are actually doing. She has been trained for forty years to trust her own house, and her own house — without itself being corrupted — has been read very carefully by people who knew what would land with its Senior Mother. The deepest part of Katalyn's competence is also the gap through which the radicals reach her. The bio of this event is [[Atril First]]; the lore framing is in [[Year 190-193 AF (Building an Empire)]].
Katalyn Atrilmed operates in a register that reads, at first, as warm to the point of indulgence. She is motherly and seductive in the same breath, and she does not separate the two — the warmth is the assessment, and the assessment is unsentimental. She watches people closely while making them feel watched fondly. The combination disarms most rooms.
She is playful in ways that are easy to mistake for unseriousness. The VTC meeting demonstrated this without ambiguity — she set up a misunderstanding about Vynisian's gender for the explicit purpose of seeing what Aries would do with it, and she did it within minutes of meeting the man. The play was real. The information she collected was also real. She does not see those as separate activities.
Her loyalty to Vynisian is older than his title and steadier than her politics. She has carried him through assassination attempts and court humiliations and never once let either touch him. She would die for him without warning, and she has made him aware of this without ever framing it as sentiment. She would also tell him, in front of guests, exactly which of his decisions she opposed — and she has done that, too.
Her Atrilian Nationalism is a position she holds plainly and does not perform contrition for. She does not raise it where it would harm Vynisian's negotiations, but she does not hide it either. When Aries asked, after watching her conduct the meeting with apparent good humor, why she had derailed it with her politics, she answered with a smile that did not have a kindness in it: because Aries was going to be in her Prince's life for a long time, and she would rather Aries learn now than discover later that her warmth had ever been the whole truth.
She makes no excuse for any of it. She does not believe excuses serve anyone.
The deepest thing in her is a certainty she does not articulate to herself in words. Atril before everything. Always. Not as a slogan — the slogan exists, the radicals chant it, she finds the chanting embarrassing — but as the shape her oath has carved into her over forty years of practicing it. The certainty is not visible in court. It is the floor under her court manners. The court manners are what people see; the certainty is what holds them up. The fact that the certainty is also, eventually, the thing through which she is reached by people more cynical than she is — that is something the certainty does not allow her to consider. By the time the question arrives, she will have already acted on the answer.
Aries Villanite's First Meeting with the Plasidian Delegation at VTC HQ ►
A Plasidian delegation arrived unannounced at VTC HQ requesting Aries Villanite by name. The group comprised Augustus Markov, Vynisian Atril (Crowned Prince of Atril), and Katalyn Atrilmed, Vynisian's primary handler, accompanied by guards. Talia Hekata attended as Aries' consultant. Katalyn deliberately allowed Aries to believe Vynisian was a woman, framing it as a test of character; Aries passed by handling the correction with humor and genuine respect, offering to follow Vynisian's lead on preferred address. The incident established an early rapport between Aries and Vynisian. The delegation's core purpose was to solicit outside assistance against Edith Markov, empress of Markovia, who was preparing a ritual to absorb all Plasidian memories into a single host body — her own granddaughter, held in stasis — and transfer her consciousness into it to seize control of Plasid. Vynisian had built what alliances he could on the island but required external support. Katalyn openly disclosed her opposition to Atril's involvement, identifying herself as an Atrilian Nationalist who considered the conflict Markovia's problem. Augustus, a former Markovian Nationalist in exile, could not contradict her. Aries declined to commit during the meeting, requesting a day to consider. After the delegation departed, Talia warned Aries not to dismiss Katalyn's political positions because of her levity, noting that her nationalism, her loyalty to Vynisian, and her flirtation were all equally sincere and deliberate. Aries departed for Plasid two days later, with Augustus accompanying him.
Katalyn Atrilmed's Assassination Attempt and Death in the Atril Palace Library ►
Katalyn Atrilmed, senior protocol officer of House Atrilmed with approximately forty years of service to the Atril crown, received a letter from the Senior Mother of House Atrilmed detailing a political crisis threatening the Atril throne: King Atril was failing faster than projected, the royal council was fracturing between older houses demanding Prince Vynisian Atril's return and younger houses pushing for a regency, grain reserves were critically depleted due to supply diversions supporting the Plasidian coalition's Harkul campaign, two of three deepwater shipyards had shed labor, and a southern peasant uprising had been suppressed with difficulty. Katalyn interpreted the letter as a directive to remove Aries Villanite, whose coalition was draining Atril's resources, in order to compel Vynisian's return and preserve the throne. Acting under House Atrilmed's ceremonial oath-keeping tradition, she prepared a poisoned cup of tea and carried a needle-set poison ring to a private meeting with Aries in the palace's western library. Aries detected the attempt before consuming the poison, restrained Katalyn, and summoned Vynisian. Vynisian, unable to order Katalyn's execution himself, deferred to Aries, who killed her swiftly. Katalyn's final words affirmed her loyalty to Atril and expressed remorse to Vynisian. The incident represents a direct collision between Atril's domestic political crisis and the Plasidian coalition's broader campaign, with lasting consequences for Vynisian's relationship with both Aries and his own house.
